having weighed our choices, it seems like a destination wedding is in our future. there’s a part of me that is worried that trying to plan a destination wedding is going to be a far more laborious task. the idea of having to pick a venue, the flowers, the photographer, the on and on and on without having the luxury of meeting and interviewing each one of them seems a little daunting.

i’ve also briefly looked at photographers that are available on the big island and the web sites that i have seen so far are just awful. really. awful. like pre-1995 awful. yeah, dude. i might have even seen blinking words.

i haven’t searched very hard, but christi has looked at photographers available and she echoed the sentiment. i’m a little nervous, but also a little excited that we are making some progress with the wedding planning. they say that getting a location is the biggest and hardest thing to do, so i guess now that we are getting more focused, it’s starting to all feel real.

monterey, grey. strike one.

muir beach, cold. strike two.

lovers point, crowded. strike three.

i guess that means that california is out. the focus is now on a big island wedding.

truthfully, i never completely gave up that dream. but i gotta say, it’s mind boggling how difficult it is to find a sandy beach wedding location in hawaii. hotel coordinators push their grand gazebos and beautifully manicured lawns. even third party wedding planners feature tropical gardens or rocky cliffs overlooking the beach. so, what about all of those beach wedding photos that i see on the internet? brides wearing hakus and grooms wearing leis… waves lapping up onto the sand just over the couple’s feet… it turns out that those weddings are for eloping couples, arranged by somebody named cousin kalei or auntie kehau. cousin/auntie is the wedding coordinator, minister, photographer, florist, and musician! apparently, no real wedding planner wants to coordinate an actual wedding event that includes chairs for guests and an aisle to walk down. so i’ve started looking at renting a beach house and having a private backyard ceremony. crazy! do we really have to rent a beach?! and the struggles don’t end there.

steve and alisaanother big challenge has been finding a photographer. i have searched website after website and have been underwhelmed by the work of any of the big island wedding photographers that i’ve seen. so, i think we may have to import one. mike and i liked the photographers who shot steve and alisa’s wedding (elizabeth morgan photography) earlier this year. we liked the way they worked together, the way they interacted with guests, and of course, their photos turned out beautifully. one catch — the wedding was on oahu. i contacted elizabeth, and she said that she would travel, but we’d pay a premium on her package prices to cover travel expenses for her and scott, her assistant. i think they might be worth it. but maybe i’m a bit biased because i made it into her 2007 slideshow =P

(did you see me? it’s the second photo in the slideshow. don’t blink, or you’ll miss it!)
